The days are getting shorter and some of us are struggling with rainy weather and a lack of sunshine. But fear not – Christmas is coming! The simple thought of self-made cookies and stollen, hot apple cider, Christmas music and Christmas trees warms my heart. As a German I might be a liiiiitttle nuts about Christmas (but not all Germans are), and I am very excited to find so many opportunities and events in our new neighbourhood, the Lunenburg County in Nova Scotia, Canada, to get into the wonderful Christmas mood.
Christmas markets have a long tradition in Germany and other European countries. In fact, we have met a Nova Scotian who has visited many Christmas markets in Germany, Sweden, Estonia and other European countries! How neat is that? But you don’t necessarily have to hop on a plane for an international flight, you can find several dates and locations in Lunenburg County and Halifax to shop for local crafts, food, and arts. There are Christmas parades to attend with a hot cocoa in your hand that will warm you up!

Ok, this is not exactly Lunenburg County, but Halifax is only a short drive away (1-1,5 hours). I had never heard of the tradition, but the story is too good not to be told quickly to give you an idea on what this event is about. Why is Nova Scotia sending a Christmas tree to Boston each year?
